Katherine Mansfield is my favourite among a most prolific generation of writers from the roaring 20s. She is insightful, perceptive, sensitive to the outdoors as well not just to the workings of the human mind which is rather an obsession with her contemporaries. She was best in recording an understated discontent with the world as it is. Her characters fell just short of living life to the full, their accute craving for the absolute ruined their chances of completion and adequacy. Apparently ordinary individuals, they were extraordinary through their complexity and inhanced perceptions. What a pity she left us so early. She would have had so much more to say.
