Burgess, Thornton W.: - "Thornton Waldo Burgess (January 17, 1874 - June 5, 1965) was an American conservationist and children's author. He was often known as the Bedtime Story-Man, after his newspaper column Bedtime Stories. Up till his retirement, he had written more than 170 books and 15,000 stories. His father was an immediate ancestor of Thomas Burgess, one of the original inhabitants of Sandwich in 1637. Burgess wrote his first stories under the pen name W. B. Thornton. Burgess continued to write books for the next 50 years, and they were translated into several languages, including French, Gaelic, German, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish. Between 1895 and 1962, Burgess "nearly 900" tales, poems, and scientific studies to publications. Included in this total are 201 children's stories written for People's Home Journal. Every issue of Burgess magazine from May 1913 until the magazine demise in December 1929 included a children's tale for more than 16 years. Burgess' final book, Now I Remember, Autobiography of an Amateur Naturalist, was released in 1960. At the age of 86, Burgess penned his 15,000th newspaper column the same year. At the age of 91, he passed away on June 5th, 1965. A year prior, his son had passed quite unexpectedly."
