All Hills High and Low: Walking the Herriot Way

All Hills High and Low: Walking the Herriot Way - Paul Amess

All Hills High and Low: Walking the Herriot Way

In the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales is perhaps the best short long distance footpath in the world - The James Herriot Way. Taking in mountains, moors, and fells, as well as two of the most picturesque and unspoiled places in the country - Wensleydale and Swaledale - join Paul in yet another of his fascinating History Walks, one which celebrates not just the natural beauty of these hills and dales, but also the amazing phenomena that was, is, and always will be, James Herriot and All Creatures Great and Small.

Learning about the people and places along the way, and discovering the long lost secrets of this remote and beautiful part of the country, Paul sets off with his trusty dog Belle, who seems more interested in muddy fields, sheep poo, and jumping into rivers.

Along the way, they learn all about one of the worst train crashes the country has ever seen, find out about Yorkshire's link to Hitler's plan for an atomic bomb, as well as coming across lots of interesting characters, some good, and some not so good.

Find out about local doctors that literally changed the world, and about their unlikely links to the most powerful men in the world. And discover which Hollywood actor stood in a freezing cold river and hit someone in the crown jewels. All this and lots more besides await you on this adventure of a lifetime, so what are you waiting for? Jump straight in.

This book forms part of the History Walks Series of Books which can be read in any order.

Paul Amess was born and bred in Hull, Yorkshire, and spent many years travelling the world to exotic places until it finally dawned on him that the best place in the world was right on his own doorstep. When he's not hiding from his kids, he now spends as much of his time as possible walking around England learning about its fascinating history and meeting often interesting and usually strange people.

He has completed many long distance footpaths throughout the UK, and his previous adventures include Hadrian's Wall Path: A Walk Through History, Rambling On: Lost on the Cleveland Way, Coast to Coast: Finding Wainwright's England, and many more besides. It should be noted that he does spend most of his time lost.
