Bend, Don't Break: A Memoir of Endurance
Bend, Don't Break: A Memoir of Endurance
Born in Limerick, FRANK O'MARA is a former Irish runner. A three-time Olympian, he was twice World Indoor Champion in the 3,000m. Frank gained post-graduate degrees from the University of Arkansas and went on to have a successful career in the US wireless industry. His life changed forever when, at the age of forty-eight, he was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson's disease. The disease progression was rapid, causing severe daily muscle cramps, tremors, inability to walk and at times speak. In this inspiring memoir, Frank recounts his life and experiences as an elite runner, as well as his fourteen-year battle with Parkinson's Disease.
The mindset that made him so successful as an athlete and in business turns out to help Frank weather the worst phases of the disease. His determination, humour and 'one step at a time' attitude bring him small victories, like slowing the disease's progression or not increasing medication levels. Eventually, Deep Brain Stimulation led to some relief, stalling the disease. Amazingly, Frank recently managed to fulfil a lifelong dream to hike in the Antarctic.
He is well aware that Parkinson's will ultimately win, but he is determined to not get ahead of himself, after all tomorrow is another day.
