Edgar Allan Poe (19 enero 1809 - 7 octubre 1849) fue un escritor estadounidense, poeta, editor y crítico literario, considerado como parte del movimiento romántico americano. Mejor conocido por sus cuentos de misterio y lo macabro, Poe fue uno de los pioneros en la narración breve, y generalmente se le considera el inventor del género de la novela policíaca. Se le atribuye que también contribuyó en el novedoso y emergente genero de la ciencia ficción. Se sabe que fue el primer escritor americano en intentar ganarse la vida con la escritura, dando por resultado una vida de penurias y pobreza.

Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story, and is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.
