A large, framed photograph of Magdalena hung on the living room wall, surrounded with fresh chrysanthemums, and a number of candles were burning on a shelf beneath. The television screen was draped with a large black cloth. Also, I'd expected to find a wealthier sort of family, due to the speed with which Constantin Poenaru had obtained approval for the exhumation and the General Prosecutor's decision to open an investigation. Now I understood - Constantin Poenaru hadn't needed to use any influential connections to get his way. The authorities must have been moved by the agony of these two people at the sudden loss of their only child."
