She completed her undergraduate degree in Anthropology and Pre-Medicine at the University of California Berkeley, received her clinical doctorate at the National College of Natural Medicine, and Master of Clinical Research from Oregon Health & Science University. As a clinician researcher, she examines the efficacy and mechanism of mind-body medicine and has published numerous papers on related topics such as synthesizing the evidence for complementary and alternative medicine, mindfulness meditation and posttraumatic stress disorder. Helané has practiced meditation regularly for 14 years completing a four-year Meditation Teacher Training with Corelight and studying with the mindfulness teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn.
