Am citit o carte minunat de neobișnuită și cu personaje fascinante. Din păcate, romanul nu este tradus la noi (cel puțin eu nu l-am găsit în limba română).
În nordul Statelor Unite, într-un sătuc uitat, dominat de un lac dătător de viață și de moarte, trăiesc două surori a căror mamă s-a sinucis, căzând cu mașina în lac. Înaintea lor, mama și surorile ei au trăit o viață liniștită în casa de lângă lac, până ce un accident neobișnuit le-a dat peste cap existența: trenul în care călătorea tatăl lor a căzut în lac, toți pasagerii găsindu-și sfârșitul în acest accident. Robinson povestește într-un interviu că un astfel de accident chiar a existat și că s-a inspirat din acea întîmplare.
Copile fiind, surorile Ruth si Lucille sunt crescute pe rând de diferite rude, toate femei, pentru a ajunge în cele din urmă în grija mătușii materne, Sylvie. Sylvie cea excentrică nu se potrivește deloc cu convențiile și regulile unui orășel oarecare. Existența alături de Sylvie le obligă pe cele două surori să facă alegeri opuse legate de stilul de viață și de modul în care se raportează la lume, la familie și la memorie. Rămâi sau pleci? Uiți sau rememorezi? Te atașezi sau mergi mai departe? Aduni sau lași în urmă? Devii diferit sau la fel ca ceilalți? Te lași domesticit sau hoinărești? Alegi siguranța sau impermanența?
