Less Is More: How Degrowth Will Save the World

Less Is More: How Degrowth Will Save the World - Jason Hickel

Less Is More: How Degrowth Will Save the World

A groundbreaking exploration of the best possible solution to the climate crisis: a new economic model, and a new way of viewing our relationship with the natural world

The world has finally awoken to the reality of climate breakdown and ecological collapse. Now we must face up to its primary cause. Capitalism demands perpetual expansion, which is devastating the living world. There is only one solution that will lead to meaningful and immediate change: DEGROWTH. If we want to have a shot at halting the crisis, we need to restore the balance. We need to change how we see nature and our place in it, shifting from a philosophy of domination and extraction to one that's rooted in reciprocity and regeneration. We need to evolve beyond the dogmas of capitalism to a new system that is fit for the twenty-first century. But what does such a society look like? What about jobs? What about health? What about progress? This book tackles these questions and traces a clear pathway to a post-capitalist economy. An economy that's more just, more caring, and more fun. An economy that enables human flourishing while reversing ecological breakdown. An economy that will not only lift us out of our current crisis, but restore our sense of connection to a world that's brimming with life. By taking less, we can become more.

A very useful book, which helped me to change the way I see the world.
I tried to find it also in the Romanian language, but it isn't translated yet. I'm wondering why...
This book is a very good manual if you think about the future of your children and you want them to breathe healthy air. You'll find concrete recommendations regarding what you'll have to do to contribute to a future based on renewable resources.
In order to build together our future, I'd like to write down just a few ideas regarding what I consider necessary to remember after reading it:
1. Stopping obsolescence will reduce the waste of materials;
2. Reducing the working time (from 5 days a week to 4 days a week) in order to produce fewer materials;
3. Sharing... Everything we could share: from transportation to living places.
I recommend this book and the previous book by Jason Hickel (The Divide: A Brief Guide to Global Inequality and its Solutions)
Update after the 2nd read: The last part of the book is an animism manual. It's regarding living with other species (fish, animals, and plants), not about seeing them as resources. It's about protecting all the species from nature and considering them equal to us. We'll be able to take these "souls" from nature and eat them, but we'll have to do this only after we are sure that we'll take only the quantity that nature can regenerate. And, of course, it's important to not forget to give back to nature as much as we take.
