My dearest Darla,
I have reached the end of my road and rest here
in the monastery of St. Baramaius in these most frigid mountains.
Before I step into the unknown, I have the time to compile the
many poems and songs which have caressed my ears over the long,
long years of my journeys across the Mountain Empire. I write
these final letters to you, my love, so that you may enjoy them
as I have.

I have ridden the long dusty cattle drives, I have sung encouragement
to stalwart mules, I have searched for lost cities, I have wept
to the laments of fallen kings, I have thrilled to the sound
of war drums, I have quaked at the call of the Horn of War, I have
prayed over the graves of dear friends, and I have felt pure joy
at the rustle of cottonwood leaves. All of this you will find
within these pages, dear Darla, and with every step you were in
my thoughts, living the life we should have had together.
