Erica Edwards has grown up in a house of complication, climaxing with the disappearance of her twin brother John. Erica has received word that John is back in the United States, living in Charleston, South Carolina. With her best friend Mitzi, she travels down to Charleston, South Carolina to find him and save him from perceived danger. Erica's parents, who may or may not behind John's disappearance, enlist the help of Roy - their other son and Erica's other brother who might also have something to do with John's disappearance - to stop her before she finds John. Interspersed in this plot are chapters featuring Erica's creative writing professor, Creighton Starke, who is reading Erica's manuscript Lowcountry Lamentations. The manuscript causes Creighton to second guess his reality and sheds further light into the childhood that brings Erica to the climactic familial showdown.
