Hopkins, Terence K.: - Terence K. Hopkins (1929-1997), one of the founding fathers of world-systems analysis, came to Binghamton in 1970 in order to found its program of graduate studies in sociology, and he remained its Director for two decades. Hopkins completed his doctoral studies at Columbia University in 1959 and joined the Columbia faculty in 1958 and remained there until 1970. In the 1960s, Hopkins conducted research in Uganda, and spent two years teaching at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Ad Hoc Faculty Group at Columbia during the 1968 rebellion. Hopkins served as a member of the Executive Board of the Fernand Braudel Center for the Study of Economies, Historical Systems, and Civilizations. Terence K. Hopkins is the author of The Exercise of Influence in Small Groups (Bedminister Press, 1964) and has coedited, with Immanuel Wallerstein, The Age of Transition: Trajectory of the World-System, 1945-2025 (Zed Books, 1996); with Giovanni Arrighi and Immanuel Wallerstein, Antisystemic Movements (Verso, 1989); and with Immanuel Wallerstein, World-Systems Analysis: Theory and Methodology (Sage, 1982). Hopkins unexpectedly passed away, embraced by his loving family, students and colleagues on January 3, 1997.
