When Oliver Twist's narrative was revealed, audiences were astonished since he was orphaned and faced with evil and struggle from the moment he was born. After fleeing the workhouse and the pompous beadle Mr Bumble, Oliver is enticed into a den of thieves populated by vivid and unforgettable characters like as the Artful Dodger, nasty burglar Bill Sikes, his dog Bull's Eye, and prostitute Nancy, all of whom are overseen by clever master-thief Fagin.
Dickens produced an altogether new type of literature by combining elements of Gothic Romance, the Newgate Novel, and popular melodrama. It is caustic in its criticism of a harsh society and dominated by an indelible feeling of dread and mystery.
