Construit în secolul al XVI-lea, finalizat în cinci ani, podul de pe Drina este suprapersonaj al unui roman fascinant.
La Višegrad, în Bosnia-Herţegovina, acolo unde Vestul întâlneşte Estul, vizirul Mehmed-paşa Sokolović a ctitorit un monument impresionant nu doar prin unicitatea elementelor arhitecturale islamice, cât mai ales prin faptul că a fost martor al istoriei acestui colţ de lume, povestea lui fiind relatată de către Ivo Andrić, scriitor sârb, laureat al Premiului Nobel pentru Literatură.
Între anii 1459-1804, Serbia, în pofida a trei invazii austriece și a numeroase rebeliuni, cărora podul le-a fost martor tăcut, a rămas sub conducerea Imperiului Otoman. Din cauză că viața religioasă a fost dominată de Islam, au existat numeroase convertiri. Cei convertiți au preluat denumirea de musulmani, iar mai târziu pe cea de bosniaci, refuzând să mai fie identificați drept sârbi.
Revolta anilor 1804-1813 condusă de către Đorđe Petrović, cunoscut și sub denumirea cu care apare ca personaj al romanului, de Karageorge, sau George cel Negru, și revolta din anul 1815, au dus după pacea de la Adrianopol din 1829, la înființarea Principatului Serbiei, a cărui independență a fost recunoscută oficial în 1878.
„E un pod pe Drina...”, de Ivo Andrić, surprinde o mare parte din viaţa podului ctitorit de Mehmed-paşa Sokolović, slav islamizat şi el, ca mulţi alţii, din perioada în care a fost în stadiul de idee şi dorinţă a ctitorului, din vremea când „cea dintâi întruchipare a podului, căreia îi era dat să se îndeplinească, a licărit ca un fulger, bineînţeles cu totul nedesluşită încă şi ca prin ceaţă, în mintea unui băieţeaş de vreo zece ani, din satul apropiat Sokolovici, într-o dimineaţă a anului 1516, pe când era dus, din locul său de baştină, spre îndepărtatul, strălucitorul şi înfricoşătorul Istambul”, până în anul 1914, când Franz Ferdinand, moştenitorul tronului Austro-Ungariei, a fost omorât la Sarajevo, de naţionaliştii sârbi...
