This cult, which continues growing because of its great strength, is linked to the tradition of the Day of the Dead. Its historical roots from both pre-Hispanic and colonial times also fit very well with contemporary Mexico.
The sculpture of the Holy Death -also known as the Lady of Shadows, White Lady, Black Lady, Holy Girl, Grim Reaper, La Flaca (The Skinny One), La Hermana Blanca (The White Sister), La Niña Bonita (The Pretty Girl)- is becoming more and more popular.
It has the traditional figure of the Day of the Dead skull and is dressed in costumes of different colors, each one with a special meaning.
Santa Muerte has a scythe, a scale, and it is holding the world in her hands. She can be adorned with pearl, gold, and silver bracelets embedded with precious stones as offerings. These are hanged by the faithful when they want to thank her for a miracle or favor received.
