Urtzi and Esuvia were childhood friends. Their marriage in young adulthood is celebrated by their community in the Roman Britain city of Portus Dubris (current day Dover, England). During the wedding ceremony, Esuvia notices that Urtzi is distracted. He then has an emotional collapse caused by a previous traumatic experience. Family members and a town healer come together to help the young couple find a way forward in their relationship. The couple embarks on a walk across the Downs, over the clifftops to Urtzi's impoverished childhood home on a riverbank. Orphaned by the Antonine Plague, Urtzi must face the tragedies of family loss and a terrible accident he once witnessed. On the journey of self-discovery, friendships form with other sojourners, and truths are revealed, culminating in a vision of hope and healing.
