„The Sea” nu este o carte pentru publicul larg. Nu o văd absorbită și înțeleasă de persoane foarte tinere, ci aș spune că este mai degrabă o carte scrisă de o persoană care a trecut prin viață pentru o anumită categorie de cititori. Adică, cei care, la rândul lor, sunt într-o fază contemplativă a vieții, a timpului, a memoriei și a pierderii. „Trecutul pulsează în mine precum o a doua inimă”, spune Banville sau „Sunt momente în care trecutul te atrage cu o asemenea forță încât pare că te-ar putea anihila.”
Valurile din această mare personală vin din trei direcții: din copilărie (când băiatul începe să deschidă ochii asupra vieții, iubirii și pierderilor), din trecutul apropiat (când soțul este alături de soția bolnavă de cancer până la final) și din prezent (când vârstnicul acum văduv se reîntoarce la casa de pe malul mării unde mergea în copilările și își pune cap la cap amintirile și emoțiile). Mintea trecută prin viață, activitatea și schimbările ei paradoxale, sunt puse sub lupă atât de intens încât uneori obiectul de studiu pare să dispară.
„Sunt momente, din ce în ce mai frecvente în ultima vreme, când pare că nu mai știu nimic, când tot ce știam pare să-mi fi căzut din minte ca picăturile de ploaie și atunci sunt cuprins o secundă de un fel de consternare paralizantă, așteptând ca totul să se întoarcă, dar fără nicio certitudine că se va întâmpla.”
Cine suntem după ce am trăit? Ce ne definește, ce rămâne din noi? Acestea sunt, după mine, întrebările acestei cărți în care te scufunzi pe parcurs, ca într-o mare. Fiecare, cu marea lui.
