Battleship Nevada the Extraordinary Ship of Firsts
This book was written by noted naval artist, author and Nevadan Wayne Scarpaci to commemorate the centennial of the launching of Battleship Nevada in 1914. It is lavishly illustrated in full color with 13 original paintings and over 100 photographs and drawings. It offers a unique perspective of one of the most famous battleships to ever serve the US Navy. From her prewar 'show the flag' cruises, to her Pearl Harbor sortie, and her resurrection and triumphant return to the fleet. Served in both the Atlantic and the Pacific Theaters during WWII she acquired a reputation for extremely accurate gunnery that was next to none. She was also known as a ship that would not hesitate to sail at full speed into harms way to support the troops on the beach. After WWII when the clock ran out for Nevada, she was designated as target ship. As such, she was twice atomic bombed and then withstood the sustained gunfire from another battleship, three cruisers, and eleven destroyers, but she defiantly refused to sink. Nevada finally succumbed to two torpedoes. A complete chronology of Battleship Nevada is included. As is a look at various models and memorabilia of the ship over the years.
