I Just Want to Go Home

I Just Want to Go Home

By: Sonia Collazo Strockyj

"Welcome home," someone held a sunflower out to her, and amazed, she accepted the dear gift, holding the precious little loaf of kolach in its soft rushnik close, but with her other hand she couldn't help but bring the sunflower closer, drinking in its beautiful golden petals with her eyes, and its rich chocolate brown florets. She for a moment closed her eyes, a split moment, and drank in its sweet scent. "I'm home, I'm home!"

For a moment she was transported back in time to a memory soft with freedom, for a moment she was back in Italy, taking her first steps into freedom, leaving Camp Bolzano, finally free from captivity.

I am home.
