Reducing stress is important today not only for our personal well-being but for the well-being of the planet, as what underlies the stress in our lives is identification with the ego and its values. The ego-driven lifestyle that most people live is wreaking havoc with our world. Fortunately, changing ourselves and our world in this way is mainly only a matter of changing our mind or, rather, changing our relationship to the voice in our head. Here is a quote from From Stress to Stillness that points to our being something other than our thoughts:

"How can your thoughts be your own voice when you don't even like much of what this voice says and, in fact, this voice often makes you feel bad? Who is it that is aware of not liking some of your thoughts? This voice in your head is not your voice, and it doesn't have to be your voice. You are what can choose to believe those thoughts and speak them and act on them or not. What is it that is aware of thought and can choose this? This is a great mystery, isn't it? We are all a great mystery and part of the Great Mystery."
